West Elm Basic Futon Bed and Mattress

West Elm Futon Bed and Mattress

In today's age it seem less frequent when you hear about house guests visiting and then staying overnight. A result of this trend is that many home owners decide not to have a spare bedroom with a bed, dresser, night stands, and chests. Instead, that space can be used as an office, craft room, or TV room for the children. This is where the beauty of a futon comes in. A futon can work in many settings from a full-size house to a small condominium. I have one in my own home that sits in my office area. There have been several occasions where I have had guests sleep on it.

Pictured is the basic futon bed and mattress from West Elm. This very simple design is available through the internet only. Moderately priced at $229 for the frame, the West Elm futon may offer you an affordable solution as both a sofa and a bed. The futon mattress is sold separately, and also retails for $229. The frame fits a full size futon mattress. Product: Basic Futon. Dimensions: 71"w x 35"d x 28"h (sofa), 71"w x 53.5"d x 10"h (bed).

Small Space Secretary Desk

small space secretary desk

small space secretary desk can be the right solution for many rooms. I enjoy having a desk to write out bills, work on a computer, and draft letters. However, finding an ideal space in the home can be a challenge with a desk. Further, a desk often does not blend in well with the remainder of the surroundings. For those people will lofts, flats, or small apartments, it's a double whammy. I have never been a big fan of having a desk in the main room of these living spaces. It usually does not flow well. At least today laptops have taken care of issues such as large computer towers and cables while trying to maintain an attractive overall room appearance. The secretary desk featured here is a small model measuring 40"w x 20"d x 59"h. With being only 20 inches deep and its ability to fit along a wall, the desk can fit in many room settings. I like the fold up shelf which can cover up stacks of paper and other items that you may not want visible at all times. The secretary desk is made of wood stained in a combination of chocolate and white. Available at: West Elm. Price: $799.

PIERROT CONVERTIBLE MODERN FUTON SOFA BED BONALDO

PIERROT CONTEMPORARY CONVERTIBLE SOFA BED BONALDO

The Europeans really know the importance of "small space" furniture and maximizing every inch or centimeter, what ever the case may be. Bonaldo furniture of Italy has a progressive collection of modern and contemporary furniture with a crisp clean look and here are three convertible sofa beds that look great and offer space saving options. With just a simple movement of a special mechanism the Loft sofa can be used in various positions and converted into a comfortable dormeuse. The angular shape and defined lines of the Loft make this piece by designer Stefan Heiliger a real eye catcher despite its small size. The Papillon and larger Papillon XL also make use of small spaces and has a much softer look and feel. With ease the dual split back of this Centro Design lays flat for a comfortable sleeping surface on command. The Papillon series comes in a wide variety of completely removable covers which makes cleaning a breeze. The third sofa bed from Bonaldo is the Pierrot which has a very linear concept and a more conventional futon type mechanism that lays flat with a simple movement of the back. A slightly arched cut out in the back rest break up the otherwise straight lines of the Pierrot which is available in leather or fabric upholstery.

The Kewb Multifunction Furniture

Kewb Multifunction Furniture

Kewb Dormitory Chair

Living in a small space is not always easy. One common difficulty is not having the right furniture for varying situations. You may want to keep things tidy and spacious for yourself, however if you have a guest you may need additional seating or a table. It is complicated to balance your need for everyday living versus what you may need in the event of company. Storing additional furniture is not always a realistic option. Furniture that is capable of fulfilling multiple needs becomes very important in smaller spaces. The Kewb is a good example of multifunction furniture.

The Kewb is a versatile piece of furniture. It can be used as a simple side table (which contains the cushions), a chair, a lounge or a small table with seat cushions and much more. It is also possible to combine multiple Kewbs to create sofas and provide even more options. The Kewb is constructed from high quality solid lacquered hard wood. There are also a wide variety of fabric options available.

It does have a futon look about it that will not agree with everyone's taste and décor. However, the Kewb is fairly inexpensive which makes it perfect for dorms and first apartments. The Kewb is a truly versatile piece of furniture if you are looking for an inexpensive piece with a multitude of uses. Check it out.
Available at Sit n' Sleep. Price: 319 British Pounds

Blue Dot Metal Origami: Real Good Chair

Blue Dot Really Good Chair

I've admired Blue Dot furnishings for some time. They offer a wide selection of reasonably priced modern furniture. I have recently discovered the Really Good Chair.

The Really Good Chair is, well, a really good idea. The chair is made of a thin gauge, laser cut, powder coated steel. It is a clean modern design. It is light and its thin profile makes it perfect for smaller spaces. Not so extraordinary to the casual observer upon seeing the assembled product -- the assembly is extraordinary part. The chair is shipped in a flat cardboard box. The pieces include the back and the seat in the flat, the legs, some spacers and the connecting hardware.

The amazing thing about the assembly of the chair is the bending. The back and seat of the chair are shipped flat and require bending -- a sort-of steel origami. The pieces that require bending are perforated with a laser so the bending is easily accomplished by hand. A portion of the cardboard shipping box is cut out and used as an angle-checking tool. You simply bend the pieces check the angle and bend the next angel
